Bang!

Somebody lies dead in the street
Blood splattered all over the show
Like yours like mine
It’s red

Yet before we scream
Before we cry foul
Before we call for help
We take a closer look
Look which way the wind is blowing

We do a colour match
Verifying the colour of the skin
Looking if it’s similar to ours
Scrutinise the texture of hair
Take an interest in their jewellery
Looking for a Cross, the Star, the Crescent

Before we scream
Before we empathise
We take a deep interest in the manner of death
Focus on the caliber of the gun
The model of the car
Somebody lies dead in the street
All we care about is the screenplay
The action
The ratings
The income bracket of the deceased
Whether they carried a purse or a wallet
Were they wearing a hoodie or not?

Before we scream
Before we empathise
Before we were human
We valued life in all its forms
Before we hunted game for fun
We hunted for survival

Now we don’t give a damn
We live in the movies
In a giant Colosseum
Indifferent to death
Watching people killed for fruitless gain

Before we were civilized
People mattered
People cared

Before people became statistics
Caring more about the location of the street
Sarajevo, Kigali, Soweto, Watts
Marikana, Brixton, New York City
And elsewhere

Somebody lies dead in the street
Blood splattered all over the show
Like yours like mine
It’s red
All you’re concerned about
Is which side of town?
